The Pole Plays an Important Role in the Basketball System

Basketball goals can be kept in place by a variety of different ways. They are commonly:
  • Attached to existing walls
  • Attached to an apparatus that hangs from the ceiling
  • Attached to a pole
Most indoor basketball goal systems are held in place by attachments secured to the ceiling that allow the system to be pulled up towards the system and out of the way when they are not in use. Outdoor basketball systems are typically held in place by basketball poles. There are also some types of basketball poles that are specifically used for indoor use.

When discussing basketball goal systems, the pole that is used to hold the goal system in place is a very important factor in building a quality basketball system. The backboard and rim can provide a great deal of stability for the goal, but the pole plays a very large role in the overall stability of the system. A quality pole helps to reduce the movement of the goal when it is hit with a shot. The basketball goal system is only as strong as its weakest link, which is either the backboard system or the pole. For this reason it is best to always pair a high quality type of pole with a high quality backboard and rim system for the most enjoyable basketball experience.

The Shape of the Pole

Basketball poles are available in different materials and a few different shapes. The most widely used shape for basketball poles is one that allows the basketball goal to be positioned inside the boundary of the court and the other end of the pole (that is secured to the court or ground) is off the court. Upside-down "L” or "gooseneck” pole shapes are used to accomplish this. Playable area under the goal is maximized and safety is increased by reducing the chances of players running into the pole.

The type of basketball pole used for these shapes needs to be very strong since the load bearing properties are compromised by not being positioned fully vertical. Weaker types of poles can be positioned in a strictly vertical manner but this presents dangers to players with the pole being so close to the playable area. Vertical poles can employ an extension system that holds the goal system out away from the pole for increased safety.

Regardless of the shape of the pole, it is extremely important that the pole be firmly mounted to the goal system and whatever surface it is on. Keeping the backboard firmly in place is important to minimizing swaying and providing a better basketball experience.

Pole Materials

Metal is the most common choice for basketball poles due to the strength it presents - even when bent. These metal posts can be hollow or solid in varying thicknesses with the solid poles being stronger but more expensive. Metal can be powder coated to enhance the durability and make it more weather resistant.

Many of the basketball poles are now being covered by padding in order to further protect players and enhance safety. This padding is available in different thicknesses for varying levels of protection.
